Does it work without signal?

Yes, entirely. The app needs no connection for anything except buying a subscription and, if you turn it on, iCloud sync. Sports halls being what they are, this was a requirement rather than a feature.

Can I referee with rules that are not IHF's?

Yes. Periods and their length, the personal foul limit, the bonus threshold, the shot clock and its reset, and time-outs per half are all configurable, with presets for IHF, youth formats and minihandball. You can also choose the 2024 or 2026 edition of the rules, whichever your competition applies.

My clock stopped when the phone locked

It did not. Both clocks are stored as timestamps rather than counters, so backgrounding, locking, a crash or a cold relaunch mid-game change nothing: reopening the app shows the correct time.

Does the Apple Watch app need the phone?

No. It has its own storage and its own clocks, and a whole game can be refereed from the wrist with the phone off. When the two devices next see each other they reconcile, and nothing registered on either is ever discarded. If the same action was entered on both, both are kept and flagged in the summary for you to resolve.

How do I cancel the subscription?

In your Apple Account settings, under Subscriptions. Cancelling stops the next renewal; the current period runs to its end. Refunds are handled by Apple.

Settings → Export my data writes every game to a JSON file that you keep. Nothing is sent anywhere.
